Betty's Fat Ones: Volume 2

Right, I'm extremely bored....so heres another helping of Betty's Fat Ones. This post is going to be divided. One half is devoted to my current techno trip...and the rest is gonna be a 'Danger' bum-fest. Some tracks new...some old (old meaning more than 3 months these days).

So I've been listening to a lot of Sander Kleinenberg recently. This guy was actually in leeds and liverpool on the same night the other week...and nobody wanted to go! However, his 'This is Sander Kleinenberg' mix album has got me further into elec-techno / prog house shizzle. On the surface, this mix may seem to drag its feet a bit; it doesn't have the "conspicuous drops" that you find in your average nu-rave track, but it is damn groovy. Here is, in my opinion the best track off the album - a rump shaking electro track by Rossell.

Rossell ft Emma - Dancing with Strangers (Dave Robertson mix)

Secondly, to follow on from Walker's Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso spotting, their track 555 is a great builder. Long intro that delivers.

Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso - 555

Now to Bjork. How I love her music. So much so that I should slap myself for sleeping on this Vitalic remix of one of her Medulla tracks! Lovely bouncy bassline and some great harmonies between Bjork's vocals and Vitalic's juicy synth work.

Bjork - Who is it (Carry my joy on the left, carry my pain on the right) (Vitalic remix)

Now, moving onto Danger. I've talked up this guy before but he seems to be getting everything right for me recently. Full of cut-up, funk bass, choppy vocals, and massive synth solos!!! This guy is really talented in my eyes. He takes the whole 80's synth / computer games sound to a new level. The track "19h11" sums up his style really. Choppy and melodic. For an electro song, it really does have some great progression.

Danger - 19h11

If thats not enough, heres another absolute head-nodder. All I can say is...what an awesome synth riff. Not difficult or obscure but really atmospheric and funky as hell.

Danger - 00h00

On a slightly different tip, Danger offers up quite a chilled little track with "7h46". It has almost a tribal feel to it in some parts....nice.

Danger - 7h46

Finally from Danger, a remix of Estelle's "American Boy". Now, usually these remixes are a bit crass for my liking (i.e. when Justice remix Justin Timberlake, etc) however, theres no denying how good it is. Sorry for the low quality but there is some brilliant melodies running through this song...ones that Kanye West would never be able to dream up (with his recycled drum patterns...pfft!)

Estelle - American Boy (Danger remix)

P.S. They are still one of the best electronic live acts to this day, amazing!

Cheers!

Radar on the Blink!

So how did this happen? A fantastic electro song get's played on Radio 1's Chris Moyles show before i've even had a whiff of it? They hardly play any music... and it's usually the 'most popular' stuff of the moment... i'm not happy!

But anyway, here it is... the Track's Bodycrash and it's by the swedish electro dudes known as Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso aka 'Buy Now' and it's an absolute banger, and at little over 2 minutes 30 you're left wanting more. It's available to download end of June. Please do!

Post - Boys Noize @ Chibuku, Liverpool

Well...last weekend...what a weekend!

The boys came up to Liverpool. We had top-notch BBQ and spent the best half of saturday tearing it up on Walker's Laptop mixer.

Also, I finally got to see Boys Noize perform live again. With my hands firmly on the barrier for most of the night I can say it was nothing short of amazing. It was my first visit to the venue, Barfly, that seemed a little dingy and surprisingly quite empty at first. However, Boys Noize played in the main "theatre" room which has a staggered dancefloor that leads down towards the stage. By the time he hit the decks the room was full.

All I can say is that he played with the same level of intensity that you expect from him; dropping some absolute tunes all night (some of which I really would like a copy of!)

So here are a few tracks that were played on the night...and also some that are in the same vein.

Firstly, Housemeister...what a beast this is! The first track off his "Who is this noise?" LP starts...instantly...with manic lo-end snyths alternating between left and right speakers. I think Erol Alkan may have dropped this at Wax:on in Leeds the previous weekend?

Another great track that I've manged to track down, Raven by The Proxy. Boys Noize did indeed drop this at Chibuku as it is quite easy to recognise the distinct "bumblebee-like" tone repeating throughout. As shit as that may sound, this is definitly one for turning the strobe on the sweaty people at front at 3:30AM.

Finally, to round up, I've thrown in a couple of tracks from my personal favourite, Danger. I'll probably be posting more from this guy once I get my hands on some higher quality versions but enjoy two of his remixes for now. He has a style that indulges heavily in the 80's-computer-games-retro-synth sound of someone like Kavinsky but hits you as hard as an someone like At the Drive-In!

Also, I've included a decent Crookers remix of Trash by The Whip. Personally, I think Crookers are a bit hit and miss but man do they 'hit' on this one! The drop is brilliant. A slow, pulsating bassline ascends and spills out into pure, crunk nasty-ness! Enjoy.

Cheers!

Housemeister - In order to dance

The Proxy - Raven

Boys Noize - Oh! (Danger remix)

Danger - Revolte at 22h10

The Whip - Trash (Crookers remix)

Betty's Fat Ones: Volume 1

Welcome to the first of a (hopefully) long running series of posts. Huzzah!

The story behind the name "Betty's Fat Ones" is long and complicated; and quite frankly, I don’t remember. However, I shall hopefully be bringing some new and interesting tunes twice a month.

First up is a stonking piece of disco-house from the French duo, Revolte. Many will spot the similarities between these and two other well-known French artists – right down to their masked appearance for live shows. Still, this track is a tremendous piece of cut-up that doesn’t sacrifice any groove in the process.

Revolte – TAKK

The next track has been around for a while but it is still pretty darn fresh. Italian based producer, Dusty Kid (whose recent appearance at Wax:on in Leeds passed me by…bugger), serves up a cracking techno track. A pulsating bass line draws you in before it erupts with a massive, repetative siren. Absolutely loving it at the moment…although not too keen on the Crookers re-work.

Dusty Kid – The Cat

The best of the rest includes a re-discovered Simian remix of The Go! Team, a smile-inducing number from Monk (with a great piano stab running through the chorus) and a swirly, bleepy re-work of Daedelus. Hope you enjoy!

The Go! Team – Ladyflash (Simian Mobile Disco remix)

Monk – Live fast die old (Headman remix)

Daedelus – Make it so (XXXchange remix)

The next post will probably have more distortion-centric tracks just to balance things out.

Cheers.

Mashups for Matt

These are a request... so here ya go!
The first one is Enya Vs. Prodigy - Smack my Orinnoco Falls Up

(Even though i'm fairly sure it should be Orinocco Flow this is the name it came to me as a few years ago so that's what i'm putting here)

Some people might know the song as 'Sail Away' but I think that's just a bit lazy to be honest. It's a song that shouldn't work mixed with prodigy, it should be truly awful, but it really really isn't. Seriously, have a listen to this Mashup of Smack My Bitch up and Orinocco flow and tell me it doesn't stick in your head.

This next one is a great song to play at an indie club,
because it starts with the very distinctive Interpol Bassline then you just hear the Dizzee Rascal vocals come in over the top. As a rule I usually hate mashups, but these are probably the only two that have stayed in my collection for any length of time.

live stand up.mp3 (Dizzee Rascal Vs. Interpol)

These songs are real growers, give em a chance, and try them out at a party or something when people have had a few... guaranteed to get a reaction. Fun stuff

Leeds Fest Faves

...

I was one of the lucky ones who got Leeds Festival Tickets when they went on sale a while back and I can't believe how good the line-up has got since then, they keep adding artists and it's getting better and better.

There's nearly all the bands i'm into at the minute like MGMT, Justice, Digitalism, Crystal castles, Be Your own Pet, Lethal Bizzle, Foals, Chromeo, The Whip etc etc.... as well as some of the band's that would have been top of my list some years ago including Slipknot and Rage Against The Machine.

The Friday night Dance tent lineup is ridiculously good...

Photobucket

CSS, Digitalism, Simian Mobile Disco, Chromeo, Crystal Castles and The Whip!?
That's going to be amazing...

This first track is possibly the best under 2minute song i've heard in years, it's such a perfect party punk song that you can't help but shout along to. I defy you to listen to this three times in a row and not at least mouth 'Food Fight!' if not shout it and punch the air.

Easily the best Crystal Castles song in my opinion, even though it is also the most accessible...

Lethal Bizzle was better than Dizzee Rascal when I saw him at Leeds Festival in 2006 and easily one of my personal highlights of the festival, i'd always had a soft spot for Bizzle but it was his live set that really got me to buy into it. Grime isn't a joke? Who knew.
This is a remix done by Sam E. Danger from one of my favorite bands of the past few years 'Test Icicles'.

So Rage Against the Machine is going to be awesome, we all know it's going to be awesome. It just has to be. Here's a good remix:

and here's my pick of some good songs involving artists playing the festival:
